Dunn’s the Word

by My Autumn Farmhouse 20 Comments

What is this Dunn that you speak of?! Well now where to begin…

Some of you may or may not be familiar with “Rae Dunn”. I post a ton of it on my Instagram, and every time I get a ton of questions about it.  (You can visit my Instagram here.) So I thought it was about time to put a little post together. Now Rae Dunn is actually a woman…a genius really, who decided to take clay mugs, bowls, plates, canisters, etc. and put this quirky little black wording on them. They also make cute birdhouses, planters, desk and pet items too. I bought my first mug about a year ago, my “I CANT EVEN” mug, and I have been addicted ever since. I have a full blown collection going, and every time I think I have it all she comes out with something new. Now the good stuff…where can you find it?!

So, Rae Dunn is the designer and the pieces are manufactured by Magenta, you can find their website here. According to the Magenta website, Rae Dunn was inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi, meaning the beauty of things imperfect. I love that! All of the Rae Dunn pieces will either have a capital M on the bottom or say Rae Dunn or Rae Dunn Clay. I find their site to be a little pricey. The selection varies but they do have some different pieces that you won’t find elsewhere. It would be only fair to give them first mention, but its not my favorite source.

Next, you can find them on sites like Amazon, EBay and Rae Dunn sale pages on Instagram. I know I have a few mug sets that will be up for grabs in my next Instagram Flash Sale Jan 24th, so check that out too! I’ll also have some vintage goods too…sorry about the shamless plug! Anywho, the prices vary here a lot. People are starting to catch onto the craze and the prices are being hiked up as a result. Some pieces are harder to find and obviously these  are priced higher…a lot higher! I’ve done some of the searching on Amazon for you, and put together some available pieces. Hurry though…these won’t last long, I can assure you! Just click on the piece your interested in below and you will be directed right to the page. Your welcome.  🙂

I have found 99% of my collection at either Homegoods, TjMaxx, or Marshalls. Just to give you a little perspective on pricing…these stores sell mugs for $3.99 and $4.99 and canisters for anywhere from $7.99 to $16.99. Unfortunately, these stores are hit or miss so here are a few tips on making sure you hit the Rae Dunn jackpot! I always try and go in the morning on either a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. This is when I have had the best luck. But call first, these pieces have become popular enough that the staff should be aware and know what you are talking about. If you don’t find anything, don’t be afraid to ask if they have more in back. Sometimes it is just sitting back there waiting to be put out or for the shelves to empty. I once spotted the sales lady at Homegoods pushing a cart full of it bowls, mugs, and canisters galore! I asked her if she was putting it out, she said yes “what would you like?” I said “ALL of IT!”. I took the whole carriage right to the checkout line! My haul from that day is pictured below.

Now Rae Dunn isn’t for everyone and that’s fine, I get it. Some people collect marbles and that’s fine too. I think her stuff is super adorable and decorative but also very functional. Although it makes me cringe, we actually use some of the bowls and plates to eat and I use my mugs everyday. Sadly the best part of my morning is picking out which mug I’m in the mood for! So I hope you enjoyed this little intro, and it helps your search a bit. I’m sure I may regret letting you all in on my secrets, but that’s the fun of it right? Be sure to share any tips you may have as well, I’d love to hear. Then stay tuned…my next blog post will be all about Rae Dunn Anonymous! 😉 Cheers!

XoXo

Nicole

I have found and my local ladies also that every store gets each. Marshalls, TjMaxx, HomeGoods some more then the others. But we just found Sweets, Snacks, Coffee, Tea Canisters, Pour, SFK, Cheese/Cut all at Marshalls. The other store gets them as well.

I went to 4 stores looking for my first purchase…of many. I was so disappointed to find none. I decided to try one more store, but went in knowing I would be disappointed. To my surprise, I walked in and there was a whole end section full! I can’t explain the pure joy!! I’m hooked and am looking forward to the collecting and the search. Thank you for your shopping tip. 🙂

Wow, I never heard of these mugs a week ago. I started following a large amount of Instagram people with design and all of a sudden, boom, everyone has these unique mugs! I checked out our tjmaxx/homegoods store and of course there were none. My hubby ordered a few on eBay for me. I’m already addicted to mugs and now I see these😬 I may have to mugs Anonymous 😂 My 28 yr old son said to me, what is up with all the mugs in this house? Lol
Thanks for your blog article and I am now following you on IG. ( simplystyledonabudget)

Such a cute post! If you find extra sugar or coffee canisters please let me know!! They’ve stopped carrying rae dunn in my area because of the extreme resellers harassing employees!

Oh no that’s awful. I hate so much that it has come to that. It used to be fun and exciting to go out and find stuff, and it would always just be sitting on the shelf waiting to be found.

Has anyone had any luck finding the Rae Dunn Pour Pitcher? What stores should I check that it would most likely pop up in? I know this one is a rarity but any helpful tips or experiences finding this one I would greatly appreciate it 🙂

I do have a quick question. I have noticed some of my pieces say “M” while others say “Rae Dunn”. These bowls look the same and have the writing but the bottom is different. Are the ones with the “M” true Rae Dunn? Were they manufactured differently? Or is one an older version of her collection and one a newer one? I have found this very confusing and have been searching on the internet when I came upon your blog. I’m hoping you can help me figure this out.

    Thank you!

      Hi Amanda!
Yes, the ones with the M are Rae Dunn as well. The M are older pieces. I believe if you were to really look into it the logo changes each year. I know I have seen at least 4 or 5 different versions. Hope that helps answer your question.

    Hi,

Here’s my question. It seems to me that the ladies that have been doing this for a while have all the inside knowledge and even made friends with the sales/stock associates so much so that I’ve been first in line waiting for the store to open with 20 people behind me and I still walk out empty handed and the ladies behind me are given stuff straight from the stockroom. How do I compete with that? BTW…it doesn’t work if you tell the manager; they’re usually in on it too. And this is with all the stores close to me.

When did Magenta add Rae Dunn’s name on the bottom? I have done plates that are clearly Dunn but just large M magenta label. Are they harder to find?
